NYU Hosts Record 370 Competitors

Congratulations to the NYU Sport Taekwondo Club and their staff on running a great event and processing the INCTL record 370 registered competitors from 24 different colleges and universities in efficient time! Hard work and good preparation on the parts of Coach Tim Marmo and Master Albert Lee went a long way towards making for a smooth event. The results have been posted on the standings page.

Thanks also to everyone for working so hard to bring your teams - competitors from 24 different colleges and universities were present, making for an incredibly deep field. Getting a team through to the medal rounds was a very difficult feat - there were 31 registered Men's A-teams and an amazing 44 registered men's C-teams, for example. Let's keep it going strong for the two final tournaments of the semester.

INCTL All-Star Team Competes at UCLA Sport Taekwondo Open

The INCTL All-Star Team with the UCLA, UCSD and USC Taekwondo Clubs

Congratulations to the INCTL All-Star team, who traveled to Los Angeles to participate in the UCLA Sport Taekwondo Open on Jan. 19, 2008. Prior to the tournament, the team also trained with the UCLA Taekwondo Club under the direction of Coach Tim Thackery, and with the USC Taekwondo Club under the direction of Coach Clayton Barber. The All-Star team was selected based on their outstanding performance and participation in the league during 2007. Coaching the team on the trip were Coaches Dan Chuang (MIT) and Tim Marmo (NYU).

The team put together a fine performance in very competitive field at the UCLA Sport Taekwondo, which fielded top-caliber collegiate and non-collegiate athletes. Among the men, Augustine Pyo (Tufts) earned a bronze medal in men's welter weight and Dan Shalev (Harvard) earned a bronze in men's feather weight. Richard Peterson (NYU) was contesting a very close match in men's welter weight when he had to bow out due to injury, and Kevin Kim (Cornell) won one and lost one match in the men's feather weight bracket.

The women's team also had an outstanding performance. Karen Chin (Cornell) earned a gold medal in women's welter weight bracket, Corinna Hui (MIT) earned a silver in women's welter, bowing out to her teammate in the final. Emily Shedletsky (NYU) earned a silver in women's heavy weight, and Miranda Ha (MIT) earned a bronze medal in women's feather weight. Nicole Houseal (Cornell) also traveled and trained with the team but did not compete due to a prior injury.

The league thanks the UCLA and USC clubs for their hospitality with a particular nod to UCLA Program Director Sean Yee. Congratulations again to the whole team!

2007 Summer Meeting Minutes

The 2007 Summer meeting minutes can be downloaded here. Important rule-changes for the upcoming year include the following:

Hogu regulations - WTF-style Chest Protectors (with the shoulder-pads and the back protection) are required for all A-team matches this year. WTF-style gloves are not required but they are recommended and may be required next year.

School divisions - schools will be partitioned into three divisions: Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3. Depending on the points scored, at the end of the season a winner for Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 will be announced. The motivation behind this change is to promote competitiveness among teams of all sizes for the upcoming year.

Weigh-ins - host schools will be permitted to provide weigh-ins the night before a tournament at the host school site in an effort to improve efficiency and ease the burden on athletes.

New board member - Master Michael Harb of Tufts University has been voted in as a new member of the board of directors. Congratulations Master Harb!
